Poker Run Insurance

My club is trying to plan it's 06 poker run and our local VFW has offered
the use of its property at no charge. The only catch is that they want our
club to carry insurance for the run. They would be handling all of the food
and beer and already are covered for that. They've told us that if we are
not insured we would not be able to use there facilities. They've been
vague about the insurance though. We are not a big chapter and 1500 - 2500
dollars for event insurance is likely more than we would make on the run.

Have any of you gotten insurance for your clubs runs? if so I'd be
interested in know what company, the type of coverage and how much it's
going to cost.

Thanks in advance

Hmmm.

Do they want to insure the riding part of the run or the VFW against liability
should anything happen on their property? Do they want you to pay them or can
you get your own insurance agent?

I am a VFW member and we have hosted several poker runs. The insurance is a
liability insurance which protects the VFW post for being sued if an injury
occurs on the property, if damage occurs to privately and Post property due
to the event. Depending on rates and overages it could cost from $250.00
to several thousand depending the size of the event and type especially if
alcohol is going to be served.

Ed,

Sometimes, this type of request is a knee-jerk reaction to someone's
anecdotal "horror story."

Is your club a legal entity?

I'd ask the VFW's agent/broker how to handle the concerns of the VFW. Other
than premises liability, the only other issue I can think of is liquor
liability and they should already have that.

If they are providing the booze, the incremental exposure (often expressed
as an increase in liquor sales) should be handled by an increase in premium
depending on the event's sales, which I am sure you've offered to cover.

Other than that, I don't see why they are making a big deal out of it.

Regards,

Doug

Rather than the VFW, have you considered a local park facility? I've
heard of good results and no insurance requirements because they're
public property. City, State or National depending upon your area.

Good luck,

I call bullshit!

The VFW is going to have proceeds from food and alcohol sales, Fuckem!

Start your poker run somewhere else and end it at the VFW (if you must)
and make a charitable donation in the VFW's name from a minor portion of
the proceeds of the run.

There are plenty of Bars and Resturants that will gladly do this for free
with no strings.

I realize this is late, but for your next run, try...... the AMA [American
Motorcycle Asso.]

You can obtain affordable event insurance through the AMA... take a look at
